Please join me for a crash course in collage to start the new year!

These 12 lessons feature 22 building block videos plus opportunities to upload your collage work. We’ll start with  gel printing techniques for creating your own hand painted collage papers, you'll be making beautiful papers in a full range of values for the provided reference photos. We'll start with the basic apple shape, move to a slightly more complex bell pepper, then to a flower with overlapping and varied petal shapes, and we'll have you collaging a complex songbird sitting on a branch by Lesson 11. Each collage lesson will feature step-by-step video lessons for transferring your sketch, underpainting, and applying paper on top. Collage Crash Course; Building Block Basics will teach you all you need to learn in order to move on to more complex subject matter.

On DATE HERE we will gather together via Zoom for the collage application overview demo with a creative community from near and far. This will be a time to bring all of your questions, too. (Don’t worry if you need to miss the live component; it will be recorded.)

Workshop Itinerary:

Lesson 1 – Paints and Papers
In this first class we will cover what you need to know about pigment, paints, paper, layering and combining colors. I’ll also show you how I clean and store my supplies and organize my gel prints.

Lesson 2 – Light Colored Solids and the Basics of Stencils and Masks
In order to eliminate the whites, I always start with a solid base layer. I do not clean my plate between layers, this makes use of any residual paint on the plate from one layer to the next. I call the leftover dried paint the crust. Your subsequent layers pick up the crust along with the newly applied paint–this creates often unexpected and beautiful results. Next we will talk about the difference between stencils and masks and practice basic layering and color combinations.

Lesson 3 – Learning to Layer
Once you have created several light colored base layers your next step is to multiply prints over and over each other in various different ways. Because fluid acrylics are varying degrees of translucency, each layer will show through and multiply with the previous print unless that pigment is opaque. We will talk about opaque colors and how they should be incorporated as base layers or used sparingly in subsequent layers.

Lesson 4 – Combining Stencil Patterns
My stencil and mask designs often include combinations for layering organic with geometric, but there are many ways to combine patterns for results. Let’s look at some layering combos utilizing multiple stencils and masks.

Lesson 5 – Adding Texture
Another way to add pattern and texture to your layers is with tools such as texture plates, foam stamps, and scraping tools. Let's explore adding pattern into the paint before we apply the stencil or mask.

Lesson 6 – Ghost Printing
A ghost print is an impression you get from the paint that has been trapped beneath your stencil or mask after you pull your initial print. Ghost prints can be utilized in several different ways; you can transfer your ghost print to a prepared light colored solid, you can multiply it over the first print, or you can let it dry on the plate and pull it with additional paint onto a new sheet of paper–the combinations are endless.

Lesson 7 – LIVE ZOOM CALL
In this LIVE session I will demonstrate all my tips and tricks for the collage application process and answer any questions you may have. If you miss this demo, you may watch the recorded replay.

Lesson 8 – The Small Apple Lesson
In this most basic shape, the sphere, we will learn how to gradually shade from highlight, to light, to light medium, to medium, to medium dark, to dark, to shadow... with paper! Be sure to have all the papers in all the values and patterns you need for this green apple..

Lesson 9 – The Red Bell Pepper Lesson
In this slightly more complex shape, we will learn how to gradually shade from highlight, to light, to light medium, to medium, to medium dark, to dark, to shadow... with paper! I typically use red-orange as my light in red, rather than pink. be sure to have a full range of values and patterns for your pepper

Lesson 10 – The Pink Daisy Lesson
In this slightly more complex shape, we will learn how to gradually shade from highlight, to light, to light medium, to medium, to medium dark, to dark, to shadow... with paper! I typically use subtle pink on white patterns for highlights in delicate petals. be sure to have a full range of values and patterns for your daisy.

Lesson 11 – The Chickadee Lesson
In this most complex shape, we will apply all we haver learned so far about shading, transitional papers, and torn brush marks. You will build on the basics we have already practiced in order to create this simple songbird, the most complex subject so far.

Lesson 12 – Bonus Videos
Finishing touches include applying acrylic varnish for even sheen and UV protection, adding hanging wire hardware, plus an opportunity to give feedback on the workshop.

Learning in any of my workshops goes both ways, we learn from each other as much as you learn from me. The Facebook group community also helps to make the whole experience special. I hope you can join me!
