Layering Stencils for Depth, Texture, and Better Prints

Combining Large Bold Shapes with Small Detailed Patterns

In this Tutorial Tidbits video, Barb from Joggles and I are working with my new Funky Florals stencil collection, combining it with designs from previous collections to build richer, more complex layers.

The key is understanding how to mix patterns of different sizes and scales.

When everything is the same size, the eye doesn’t know where to go. But when you combine larger, bold shapes with smaller, more detailed patterns, you start to create depth, movement, and visual balance.

That’s when your layers begin to feel intentional.

We also focus on how these patterns interact—how to let some layers stand forward while others fall back, creating texture without overwhelming the composition.

This is one of the most important shifts you can make in your work. Once you understand how to layer with scale and pattern in mind, your prints will immediately feel more dynamic and complete.

If you’re ready to move beyond flat or cluttered layers, this is a technique that will make a real difference.
