Tinted Transparency with Medical Exam Paper

Unify Your Colors with a Transparent Tint!

Sometimes the most exciting techniques come from the simplest materials.

Barb from Joggles and I have been experimenting with medical exam paper, and what we discovered is one of those subtle but powerful shifts that can completely change the way your collage comes together.

The goal was to add color… without losing transparency.

We begin by printing a pattern directly onto the medical exam paper. On its own, the paper already has that delicate, semi-transparent quality—but the real transformation happens next. By applying paint from the back, the paper becomes softly tinted while still allowing everything beneath it to show through.

And this is where the magic really happens.

When you layer this tinted paper over your collage, it doesn’t cover or compete with what’s underneath. Instead, it gently unifies the entire piece with a single color, creating a sense of cohesion while preserving all the texture, detail, and complexity you’ve built below.

It adds softness. It adds atmosphere. It brings everything together without flattening the work.

I love techniques like this—ones that don’t demand attention, but quietly elevate the entire piece.

Medical exam paper is such an unexpected material, but in this context, it becomes a beautiful tool for creating luminous layers and a more painterly finish.
