Wax Crayon Texture Rubbing–Who Can Resist?
Double the Fun with Beeswax Crayons and the Gel Plate
This week in the studio, I’ve been playing with a fun, slightly accidental discovery—using beeswax crayons as a resist on the gel plate. It all started when I was printing over some of my kids’ crayon drawings and noticed something magical: the paint on the gel plate didn’t adhere to the wax the same way it did to the paper. The result? A ghost image left behind that was grungy, fragmented, and absolutely beautiful.
Even better? I realized the original crayon drawing—now covered in its own unique mix of texture and paint—was just as lovely. One simple process gave me two gorgeous sheets of decorative rice paper, perfect for collage, art journals, scrapbooking, and all kinds of paper play.
So this week’s technique is all about getting twice the texture and double the joy from one creative experiment. Who doesn’t love a good two-for-one?
