Lift & Print with Foam Stamps on the Gel Plate
Fun Technique. Two Prints for the Price of One!
Sometimes a small shift in process can open up something entirely new.
This technique, which Barb and I call Lift and Print, started as a simple experiment and quickly became one of my favorite ways to use foam stamps with the gel plate.
Instead of stamping directly onto a surface, the foam stamps are used to lift paint from one gel plate and transfer it to a second plate. The gel plate becomes an indirect printing surface, and the stamps act as a bridge between the two.
What makes this so interesting is the quality of the marks.
Because the image is transferred rather than stamped directly, the result is much more subtle. The marks feel embedded within the print instead of sitting on top, creating a softer, more integrated effect that works beautifully in layered compositions.
And then there’s the added bonus…
You end up with two prints from a single process. Each one carries a slightly different version of the marks, with variations in paint, pressure, and transfer that make them unique. It’s that element of unpredictability that makes the process feel so creative and rewarding.
I love techniques like this—ones that expand what a familiar tool can do. Foam stamps, which are often used for bold, graphic impressions, take on a completely different role here, creating texture and movement in a much more nuanced way.
