Scribbles and Doodles Soup! More Layering Ideas

MORE Layering ideas for Complex Gel Prints

This week, Barb and I are in the studio working with my newest stencil collection, Scribbles and Doodles Soup, and using it as a way to talk about successful layering. We intentionally paired these new designs with stencils from my earlier collections to show how easily you can mix and match patterns—as long as you pay attention to scale and visual weight.

In this post and video, I walk you through how to choose stencil combinations wisely, focusing on mixing large, medium, and small patterns so each layer has room to breathe. Understanding pattern size makes all the difference when building depth without overwhelming your print.

Gel printing is also a wonderful way to slow down and enjoy the creative process. Once you’ve built a collection of printed papers, they can be used in countless ways—journal pages, scrapbooking, mobiles, place cards, prayer flags, collage, and more.

I create many of my gel-printed papers specifically for my Paper Paintings artwork. If you’d like to see how these layered papers translate into finished pieces, you can explore my portfolio at PaperPaintings.com.
