Klimt Effect–Soft Pastel Resist on the Gel Plate

Pastel Resist, Part Two: Soft Pastels on the Gel Plate

This week, I’m continuing my exploration of pastel resists on the gel plate.
Last week, I used Conté Crayons—and now I’ve moved on to soft pastels, discovering some exciting new possibilities.

While the soft pastels also resist Golden Fluid Acrylic in metallic gold, they behave quite differently than the Conté sticks. These buttery pastels create a unique low-relief rubbing effect when used with a stencil, resulting in a softer texture and a more delicate, layered look.

The results have that same eye-catching shimmer from the metallic resist, but with a whole new surface feel and visual depth. And to finish it all off, I’m sharing a simple trick to seal the print so nothing smudges—just clean, bold color that stays put.

NOTE: Clean the residual Conté crayon and pastel from your plate with some baby oil.
